Epilepsy
A transitory distubance in consciousness or in motor, sensory, or autonomic function with or without a loss of consciousness.
Seizure
is paroxysmal, uncontrolled electrical discharges in the neurons of the brain that result in sudden, viloent, involuntary contraction of a group of muscles.
Causes of seizures include:
hypoglycemia, infection, electrolye imbalance, alcohol, barbiturate withdrawal, and water imbalance.
Tonic-Clonic (Grand Mal)
excessive nuronal discharges result in a convulsion with alternate contraction and relaxation of opposing muscle groups.
Postical period
a rest period that follows a seziure.
Status epilepticus
recurrent seizures that occur so quickly consciousness is not fully regained between seizures.
List two nursing interventions for a patient that has has seziures.
Maintain a patent airway; protect the patient from injury (padding the siderails, etc)
Diagnostic test used for seizures.
EEG.
Until seizures are controlled the patient should avoid:
driving a car, operating machinery, or swimming
During a seizure the nurse should:
prevent aspiration & injury; observe & record; never leave the patient alone; if patient is sitting or standing lower the patient to the floor; support and protect the head; turn the head to the side to maintain airway; if there is time lossen the clothing; do not try to restrain the patient.
What is a nursing diagnosis for a patient with epilepsy?
Ineffective airway clearance.
What is a "risk for" nursing diagnosis for a patient with epilepsy?
Risk for injury.
