(RHYTHM) Accenting of a note at an unexpected time, as between two beats or on a weak beat. Characteristic of African culture or Jazz style.
Polyrhythm
(RHYTHM) Two or more rhythms performed at the same time. One characteristic of African music is that several rhythms are played at the same time, creating a complex musical sound. Found in African drumming. main drum plays a steady beat, the other drums play a variety of different rhythms.
Whole Note
(RHYTHM) Receives 4 beats of sound in 4/4 time. A white note head with no stem.
Half Note
(RHYTHM) Receives 2 beats of sound in 4/4 time. A white note head with a stem.
Quarter Note

Whole Rest

Half Rest

Quarter Rest
(RHYTHM) Receives 1 beat of silence in 4/4 time. This black zigzag line is drawn between staff lines two and four.
Eighth Rest
(RHYTHM) Receives one half of a beat of silence in 4/4 time. This rest looks like a number seven and is drawn between staff lines two and four.
Sixteenth Rest
(RHYTHM) Receives one quarter of a beat of silence in 4/4 time. This rest looks like a number seven with 2 flags and is drawn between staff lines two and four.
