neuron cell bodies
Gray matter is composed of?
efferent
Nerve impulses carried from the brain to the periphery.
neuroglia
non-excitable supporting cells of nervous tissue
sympathetic nervous system
division of the ANS concerned primarily with preparing the body in stressful or emergency situations
enteric nervous system
resembles a mesh within walls of digestive organs; regulates functioning of the gut; under control of CNS
somatic effectors
skeletal muscles; denervation (cut it) causes flaccid paralysis and atrophy; always generate EPSP
node of ranvier
small gap between myelinated segments where axonal membrane is exposed; increase speed of impulses
depolarization
loss of charge difference between outside and inside of the plasma membrane
repolarization
Cell returns to resting potential
saltatory
Action potential regenerated at each step, jumps from node to node
IPSP
Waits for K to build up in the cell and reach threshold. K wants out of cell
EPSP
increases likely hood of post synaptic potential firing
Potassium Channels
open to allow repolarisation of membrane
Sodium Channels
open to allow depolarisation of the membrane
Agonists
drugs which mimic the activity of neurotransmitters
neurotransmitters
chemical compounds that carry a signal across the junction between neurons
MAO
Breakdowns Norepinephrine and serotonin
Resting Potential
the potential difference between the two sides of the membrane of a nerve cell when the cell is not conducting an impulse
Threshold
The point at which a nerve impulse is triggered
parkinson's
caused by dopamine deficits in the brain (movement circuit)
neuropeptides
neurotransmitters made of polypeptides
catecholamines
made in the medulla, from actual or modified neural tissue, such as epinephrine, norepinephrine and dopamine, are important roles in behavior and stress responses
prozac
an antidepressant drug that blocks the reabsorption and removal of serotonin fron synapses
hyperpolarization
movement of negative ions (anions) into cell, and positive ions (cations) out of cell
