Frontal plane-
divides the body or an organ into front and back, anterior and posterior. Most routine x-rays are first shot in the frontal plane.
Sagittal (lateral) plane
divides the body into right and left sides. A lateral x-ray displays the body part in the sagittal or lateral plane.
Transverse plane-
divides the body or organ into upper and lower portions, like a cross-section. CT scans take films in the transverse plane.
