Characteristics shared by living systems
Cellular Organization, Ordered complexity, Sensitivity, Growth, Development, and reproduction, energy utilization, homeostasis, and evolutionary adaptation
Cellular Organization
all organisms consists of one or more cells. often too tiny to see, cells carr out the basic activities of living. Each cell is bounded by a membrane that seperates it from its surroundings
Ordered complexity
all living things are both complex and highly ordered.
Sensitivity
all organisms respond to stimuli
growth, development, and reproduction
all organisms are capable of growing and reproducing, and they all possess hereditary molecules that are passed to their offspring, ensuring that the offspring are of the same species
energy utilization
all organisms take in every and use it to perform many kinds of work. every muscle in your body is powered with energy you obtain from the food you eat
homeostasis
all organisms maintain relatively constant internal conditions that are different from their environment
evolutionary adaptation
all organisms interact with other organisms and the nonliving environment in ways that influence their survival and as a consequence organisms evolve adaptations to their environment
cellular level
atoms to molecules to macromolecules to organelles to cells
organismal level
tissue to organ to organ system to organism
population level
population to species to community to ecosystem to biosphere
deductive reasoning
applies general principles to predict specific results
inductive reasoning
the logic flows in the opposite direction, from the specific to the general
hypothesis
a suggested explanation that accounts for those observation; a proposition that might be true
experiment
testing a hypothesis
variables
influential factors
test experiment
one variable is altered in a known way to test a particular hypothesis
control experiment
the variable is left unaltered
reductionism
used to understand a complex system by reducing it to its working parts
theory
a proposed explanation for some natural phenomenon, often based on some general principle
theory
the body of interconnected concepts supported by scientific reasoning and experimental evidence that explains the facts in some area of study
basic research
intended to extend the boundaries of what we know
applied research
the information generated by basic research contributes to the growin body of scientific knowledge and it provides the scientific foundation utilized by...
peer review
the process of careful evaluation
selection
as the frequency of these characteristics increases in the population, the nature of the population as a whole will gradually change
homologous
same evolutionary origin, but they now differ in structure and function
analogous
have similar function but different evolutionary origins
phylogenetic tree
the pattern of descent obtained
cell theory
founded by german biologists matthias schleiden and theodor schwann
cell theory
all living organisms consist of cells
dna
deoxyribonucleic acid
dna
a long,cablelike molecule
dna
formed from two long chains of buliding blocks called nucleotides, wound around each otehr
genome
the entire set of DNA instructions that specifies a cell is called its...
