terms list
succession
directional change in community composition and structure through time.
early successional species
species characterized by a high growth rate, smaller size, high degree of dispersal, high rates of population growth (r-selected)
late successional species
species characterized by lower rates of dispersal and colonization, slow growth rates, large and longer lived (k selected)
disturbance
any process that limits organisms by destroying biomass
secondary succession
succession occuring after a disturbance
primary succession
succesion on newly exposed geological substrates
chronosequences
groups of sites within the same area that are in different stages of succession
facilitation model
early successional species prepare way for late stage species
inhibition model
early successional species exclude other species from colonizing
tolerance model
early successional species thrive. Later species invade due to ability to live in low resource conditions
autogenic environmental change
change in environment resulting from organisms
allogenic environmental change
change in environment resulting from physical processes.
intermediate disturbance hypothesis
diversity is highest at intermediate frequencies of disturbance
