the condition in which all of the body's systems are working their best
Metabolism
physical and chemical processes, that must be working at a steady level
Organ
a structural unit of the body that performs a specific function
Tissues
made up of a group of cells to perform a similar task

the building blocks of bodies
Integument
a natural protective cover (skin)
Glands
glands secrete hormones
Hormones
chemical stubstances created by the body that control numerous body functions
Dilate
widen, when outside temperature is too high
Constrict
narrow, when the outside temperature is too cold
Bones
the skeleton or framework of the human body ( 206 bones)
Joints
where two bones meet at a joint
Muscles
provide movement of the body parts to maintain posture and to produce heat
Atrophy
when the muscle wasted away, decreases in size, and becomes weak
Contractive
the muscle shortens, becomes inflexible, and " freezes" in position
Respiration
the body taking in oxygen and removing carbon dioxide (Breathing in and breathing out)

the process of breaking down food so it can be absorbed into the cells

the main part. ie; the brain is part of the central nervous system
Peripheral
extending from the main part. ie; nerves in the arm are part of the peripheral nervous system
Proximal
closer to the origin. ie; the shoulder is proximal to the elbow
Distal
further from the origin. ie; the elbow is distal to the shoulder
Parietal
pertaining to the wall. ie; the parietal pleura lines the chest cavity
Visceral
pertaining to the organs. ie; the visceral pleura covers the lungs.
