Central Service Technicians work in a controlled environment. They help maintain that environment by removing street clothes that may carry contaminants and changing into facility-issued scrubs. They wear hair covers and follow specific dress codes to reduce the amount of microorganisms introduced into the work area.
Name and Label each work area with the correct Temperatures, Humidity, and Air Exchanges required. to 73 F Humidity: 30% to 60% Airidity: 30% to 60%
1. The "Decontamination Area" (far left of diagram) should be shaded to represent a Biohazard Area. 2. The following Temperature, Humidity, and Air Exchange Requirements should be listed: Decontamination Area: Temperature: 60 to 65 F Humidity: 30% to 60% Air Exchanges: 10 per hour Packaging/Processing Area: Temperature: 68 to 73 F Humidity: 30% to 60% Air Exchanges: 10 per hour Sterile Storage: Temperature: 75 F or lower Humidity: Less than 70% Air Exchanges: 4 per hour 3. Central Service Technicians wear PPE in the Decontamination area.
PPE is designed to protect workers in biohazard areas from bloodborne pathogen exposures that may occur as they handle contaminated items.
Food and Beverages are not allowed in Central Service work areas.
Food and Beverages are not allowed because they may spill and contaminate sterile items or impact sterilization outcomes.
Before beginning work, Central Service Technicians remove watches and other jewelry before beginning work.
Watches and other jewelry can harbor microorganisms that could be transmitted into or out of the Central Service work areas.
Floors in the Central Service department should be wet-mopped daily. They should never be swept or dust-mopped.
Central Service Technicians should not eat or drink in their work area for several reasons: Beverages may spill and contaminate items. Food and Beverages may attract insects. Central Service Technicians should not eat in the work area because their hands may be soiled and they may transmit bacteria. If a Central Service Technician's hands become soiled with oils from foods, they may transmit those oils onto instruments that are going to be sterilized.
